The town was originally named Cannonsburgh and renamed Murfreesboro in tribute to Hardy Murfree, a Revolutionary War Hero. From 1818 to 1826 the city was the capital of Tennessee. In 1862, during the Civil War, the notable Battle of Stones River occurred near Murfreesboro. When the fighting was over, the city was utilized by the Union Army as a supply base. The Murfreesboro Greenway System includes the Stone River and Lylte Creek trails. The paths lead to Cannonsburgh Village, Fortress Rosecrans as well as Stones River National Battlefield. They're popular for walking, skating, jogging and bicycle riding. There are several other notable trails for recreation including Twin Forks Trail, Barfield Wilderness Loop Trail and the Stones River Battlefield Loop Trail.
